Name: Virgil Polum Date: Jun 28, 1920  -  Feb 04, 2010 Obituary: Virgil B. Polum, age 89, of 3283 Soo Marie Ave. died February 4, 2010 at St. Michael’s Hospital. Virgil was born June 28, 1920 to the late Benjamin & Helen (Grubba) Polum in Mountain Lake, MN. His family moved to Stevens Point, were Virgil grew up, attended the local grade schools, and graduated from the Stevens Point High School. Virgil was inducted into the U.S. Military on October 15, 1940. During his time of service he earned a Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal, an American Defense Service Medal, a Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, and six Over Seas Service Bars. He was honorably discharged on August 16, 1945. He married Constance Leary on October 2, 1948 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. She preceded him in death on December 19, 2008. Soon after being discharged from the military, Virgil began working for Soo Line Railroad. He worked as a switchman and a brakeman. He worked for the railroad for over 35 years and retired in 1981. Virgil will be remembered as an expert woodworker and craftsman. He had a passion for the railroad and trains. In his spare time, Virgil loved to fish, was an avid Packer fan, and enjoyed walks with his little white dog. Survivors include daughter Yvonne (Dale) Tinklenberg of Plover; and granddaughter, Jennifer Tinklenberg of Milwaukee. He is preceded in death by his Parents; wife, Constance; and brother, George. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at St. Stephen Catholic Church with Rev. John Potaczek officiating. Friends may call at Boston Funeral Home on Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at the church. Burial will follow in Guardian Angel Cemetery. Memorial may be made to the Humane Society of Portage County. Your “strong will” will be dearly missed… we will miss doing things “your way”.
