Born July 29, 1918, in New York City, Dan was the son of Jennie (Griff) Dieterich, a flautist, and Roy O. Dieterich, a band leader and singer. Dan, his parents, his half sister Marian, and his brother Roy traveled widely while his parents performed in vaudeville with such entertainers as Buffalo Bill Cody and the Marx Brothers. They also performed at the Chicago World’s Fair.
In 1941, Dan married Mary Ellen Biesen, with whom he raised five children: Drew, Daniel J., Mary, Margaret (Peg), and Paul. He served briefly in the US Army Air Corp and was honorably discharged in 1942. He worked for United Air Lines for over 30 years, most of those as an Industrial Engineer, and he lived in several cities and towns in northern Illinois while doing so. In 1987, Dan and Mary Ellen moved to Wisconsin with their son Paul. Dan was a devoted husband and a loving father. An avid gardener, he also sang, whistled, and played the piano beautifully.
